Hey Maegen!
Maegen M.
Hello
Maegen M.
sorry I missed the pirate jokes
Shea G.
I'm glad you could make it

Don't worry, they are usually terrible
Maegen M.

7:35 PM
Maegen M.
A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel down the front of his pants.
Maegen M.
He sits down at the bar and orders a drink.
Gillian A.

Shea G.
Hi Gillian, glad you could make it
Maegen M.
The bartender brings it to him and asks "What's the wheel for"
Maegen M.
And the Pirate responds "Arrr, it's drivin' me nuts"
Gillian A.
Hi Shea, glad to be here
Shea G.
That was terrible Maegen
Shea G.
very nice
Shea G.
Gillian, people tend to show up rock star late here, so we actually don't end up getting started for 10-15 minutes
Shea G.
just so you don't think we just tell bad pirate jokes all night
Shea G.
;)
Gillian A.
Ah, sounds like you'r on BC time.....
Gillian A.
nice!
Shea G.
I think it's also been called Boulder time
Apr 11
7:40 PM
Shea G.
It's perfect that we're using Campfire for tonight's disucssion
Maegen M.
I've always called it princess time. I am never late nor am I early. I arrive precisely when I mean to.
Shea G.
the company who makes CF is very Web 2.0
Shea G.
lol
Maegen M.
Now I am not the most web savvy person.
Maegen M.
What exactly is Web 2.0
Shea G.
I'll cover it in my intro, but the quick definition could be seeing the web as a platform, more like a program you have loaded on your computer than a website. It's much broader than that, but that's one of the basic ideas
Maegen M.
got it
Shea G.
I think even if you asked six people who "know" what Web 2.0 is, you'd get a different answer
Shea G.
;)
Shea G.
OK, since new people can scroll up and read to catch up, we will start in 2 minutes.
Shea G.
two minute warning
Shea G.
get your snacks or hit the BR now, smoke 'em if you got 'em
Shea G.
and get off the phone Jason
Shea G.
;D

7:50 PM
Shea G.
Tonight we'll be discussing Web 2.0, Green Business, and the convergence of the two.
Shea G.
ok, good to go, my appologies for the technical difficulties
Shea G.
For those unfamiliar or a little hazy about what Web 2.0 is exactly, I'll run through a quick definition.
Shea G.
Web 2.0 was coined by the folks at O'Reilly Media. I'll quote from their history of the concept:
Shea G.
The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.
Daniel N.

Web 2.0 sees the web as a platform, to use to deliver community centric, hackable, user accessible, component built, long tail reaching, perpetual beta service apps.
Jason T.
Hey Stephen - good to see you. Didn't take you long to jump right in (which is awesome)! (he signed up for GB.net just today)
Daniel N.
say that 5 times fast
Shea G.
Open this jpeg up to see the Web 2.0 Meme Map that was put together by O'Rielly:
Shea G.
Shea G.
So the question we find ourselves faced with is how to use Web 2.0 to build green apps that both make profit and do something to help save the planet?
Stephen F.
Hi there...Just trying to figure out what's going on here :-)
Shea G.
Our special guest tonight is Daniel Newman. I will quote from my blog:
Jason T.
Pirate jokes, mostly.
Shea G.
...the brains behind Pocket Fuzz, Zuvo (which he started when he was 20), and an in-stealth-mode wireless app. He’s also my tech partner with Offset My Life and will probably be involved in my in-stealth-mode green eCommerce app. He’s hip, techy, a little geeky (the good kind), and knows his sh*t when it comes to Web 2.0.
Shea G.
We'll start off tonight by letting everyone catch up with all the text I just pasted, then opening the floor to Daniel to give an intro on himself and what gives him the right to even be a Special Guest ;)
Shea G.
Then it's open to questions and freeflow disucssion
Shea G.
Take it away Daniel
Apr 11
7:55 PM
Daniel N.
thanks shea
Daniel N.
i began hacking (the good kind) when i was about 12 and have been on the computer ever since
Daniel N.
over the past few years i have been developing apps that would now fall under the category of web 2.0
Ryan W.
hey gang
Jason T.
Hey Ryan
Shea G.
Hey Ryan
Ryan W.
before I get into the green biz mode if you haven't seen Harvey Birdman Attorney at LAw do yourself a favour and find it
Daniel N.
lol
Apr 11
8:00 PM
Ryan W.
i love the world of technolgy I live in. I just got of the phone with my mother who I was showing pictures to online (debating a house I may buy) while silmutaneously logging in to an online green biz chat
Daniel N.
if anyone has any question, let em fly
Daniel N.
if they are technology related, even better
Shea G.
While chatting with me back channel via Skype
Daniel N.
;)
Ryan W.
oh yeah skype too
Shea G.
I have a questions- how much Greeness have you seen, if any, in Web 2.0 companies?
Daniel N.
hmm
Apr 11
8:05 PM
Daniel N.
in the hundreds of new web 2.0 companies coming out weekly i would have to say that i havent seen any real mentions of green
Daniel N.
as a focus
Maegen M.
what kind of apps have you been developing adn what defines them as Web 2.0?
Ryan W.
good, I've got plans every conceivable niche in green!
Shea G.
where do you think the biggest opportunities lie in mergine Green with Web 2.0?
Ryan W.
excepts offsets, someones on that
Daniel N.
and nothing really pops to mind as even a mention...
Shea G.
mergine = merging
Jason T.
Also, I just want to share some things that I think of when I think of web 2.0 (for those who may not be so familiar with the term. They include - peer production - user generated content - revenue sharing (love this!) - and social software
Stephen F.
what about green businesses that are using web 2.0 effectively, or Web 1.0 for that matter
Daniel N.
right on jason
Pete R.
has entered the room
Shea G.
I looooovve revenue sharing
Shea G.
Welcome Pete!
Pete R.
Hi guys, sorry I'm late
Ryan W.
checkout the web20show.com, and listen your way to web 2.0 understanding
Daniel N.
i think hosting companies are doing well with green
Shea G.
We're not too far along, you'll be able to catch up quick Pete
Daniel N.
at least in putting it as a market differentiator
Jason T.
The reve share is going to make OffsetMyLife hUgE. I mean, what could be better: save the planet and make money. Sign me up! (You know, if I wasn't already)
Shea G.
I think a green Digg would be awesome
Ryan W.
http://www.hugg.com here's the scoop!
Shea G.
if you can get the community there
Daniel N.
which is a very "Web 1.0" type of company
Apr 11
8:10 PM
Jason T.
For the green scene "revenue sharing" could even be replaced by "generated revenue for non-profits". Sort of like squidoo did before they started offering rev share to lensmasters
Daniel N.
how do you see a green digg working shea?
Shea G.
Thanks for the link Ryan
Ryan W.
hugg is green digg!!!!!
Shea G.
just like that, just a green news and links Digg
Daniel N.
well there it is!
Ryan W.
powered by an open source digg engine
Daniel N.
thats great
Pete R.
Help. whats a Digg?
Ryan W.
tell them I sent you
Jason T.
Wow. That was fast Ryan. Just throw a little code together did you:-)
Ryan W.
digg.com allows users to vote content to the main page
Ryan W.
unfortunately not mine
Pete R.
thanks
Jason T.
SO basically the readers/users decide what is important instead of "the man". Sort of the opposite of Fox "News"
Shea G.
Faux News
Daniel N.
lol
Ryan W.
yes, but don't necessary count on people to digg great stories
Shea G.
Digg was started by a former IT guy and TV host with G4, the gaming/text network
Daniel N.
are there any other things that can get voted to the top of something?
Shea G.
big success real quick
Ryan W.
there is something to be said for an editors lens!
Shea G.
I think Digg presents a nice filter for me to filter
Ryan W.
I think you can submit, I have signed up... I/ll try it now
Daniel N.
i like hugg, but its really just news again...cool concept, but i bet there's something else
Ryan W.
what else are you looking for?
Ryan W.
this is web 2.0 happening by the way
Ryan W.
soryy btw might be more web 2.0
Jason T.
Is Hugg from Treehugger? It looks like it may be
Ryan W.
i am pretty sure
Ryan W.
as in sure
Daniel N.
i dont know exactly, but i bet there is some sort of community force that could happen to propel something
Maegen M.
it appears to be from treehugger
Daniel N.
news is a great and easy thing to push and manage
Apr 11
8:15 PM
Daniel N.
but what if the votes were credits (maybe tied to dollars) that actually went toward something
Ryan W.
I am confident that it can. there are so nay models to choose from but i think we need to really focus on audience
Daniel N.
community fund raising perhaps?
Shea G.
that's a great idea
Shea G.
micro transactions towards different causes
Daniel N.
exactly
Shea G.
you may only give $.50, but multiply that out by 10,000
Ryan W.
if anyone knows a thing or two about micro payment I would liek to talk about commuinyt fundrasing with you later
Maegen M.
that would be incredible
Jason T.
The Hunger Site - http://www.thehungersite.com - is what got me started in this whole green/internet business thing. I'm wondering was a TheHungerSite.com Web 2.0 would look like?
Shea G.
sounds like Daniel came up with it
Shea G.
you could scale it down to ads even?
Shea G.
I wonder if a website that targets greenies like that would have a higher ad click rate because people knew the funds were going towards a non-profit
Ryan W.
like the google browser in firefox
Jason T.
I also founded Planet-Save.com (a web based e-mail system that saved 5 square feet of rainforest for each e-mail sent or received) when I was in college. I often wonder what the next step beyond that (to web 2.0) there might be to take
Daniel N.
where did the money come from?
Shea G.
that was a sweet idea Jason
Daniel N.
advertisers?
Daniel N.
(that is a sweet idea btw)
Maegen M.
essentialy a pay per click campaign?
Apr 11
8:20 PM
Maegen M.
that would be awesome
Ryan W.
I am pretty sure its referal from every search done from the moziila/google page
Jason T.
Yes, I can say that greed ads on a green "donation generation" site have higher CTR. For example, our Click to donate feature on RedJellyfish.com http://www.redjellyfish.com/ has CTR between 1% and 3% which is 4 - 12 times higher than the industry average
Shea G.
nice
Maegen M.
that is impressive response
Jason T.
Daniel - advertisers. It was like hotmail, everytime an e-mail was composed/sent a banner ad was shown. Green companies would pay us to advertise then we take the appropriate amount and donate it to The World Land Trust
Jason T.
Thanks, I had a lot of fun working on it. Kind of regret selling it
Maegen M.
Why did you sell?
Maegen M.
And is it still maintained?
Jason T.
Then we added opt-ins to the registration page ("get your planet-save.com e-mail address started off right with these great newsletters") and that was huge
Shea G.
Daniel, would you say it's harder or easier to develop a Web 2.0 app and why?
Jason T.
Maegen - well.....money. It was a year after I graduated college and the amount was more than I had ever seen. In the end, I could have made a lot more by KEEPING it (and done a lot more good). Lesson learned I guess
Shea G.
Hey, I say flip when you can man
Shea G.
You have a successful startup under your belt
Maegen M.
true that.
Shea G.
and a lot of time ahead of you to kick ass with all you learned
Jason T.
It is still mantained, you can see it here (it has changed a LOT since I sold it). http://www.planet-save.com
Apr 11
8:25 PM
Daniel N.
i would say that in comparison to a web 1.0 company, a web 2.0 is both quicker and cheaper to develop
Jason T.
That's a good point, which I need to keep telling myself. If I hadn't sold it, I probably never would have started GreenBusiness.net
Daniel N.
even if the thing flops, you havent lost a ton of money
Shea G.
and you wouldn't be here right now
Jason T.
Daniel - what are the three web 2.0 companies that you think have the largest potential?
Jason T.
Shea - that's exaclty right!
Daniel N.
current ones? or things that havent been invented yet?
Stephen F.
how about both
Jason T.
I would like to see 3 for both categories :-) (Dibs on the ones that haven't been started yet)
Shea G.
and if you would, why is it cheaper to develop Web 2.0 companies?
Shea G.
Dibs will cost you $.83
Shea G.
View paste
each!
Ryan W.
why cheap - open source everything = low start up for software
Ryan W.
linking blogs... quick to promote
Jason T.
.83 cents? Hmm...will need to talk with my banker....
Daniel N.
thats exactly right
Daniel N.
software and hosting cost close to nothing
Daniel N.
development is either done by one person or a very very small team
Maegen M.
I'll see your $.83, and raise you to $.87. ;)
Daniel N.
which is either you, or some college kids
Ryan W.
or by a diffuse team who don't need to sit down together to get things done
Jason T.
Doh!
Daniel N.
absolutely
Ryan W.
from their own homes = no office
Apr 11
8:30 PM
Daniel N.
im still trying to come up with my list of web 2.0 companies...there are some huge ones that are obviously met their potential...
Shea G.
what's Web 3.0 look like to you?
Ryan W.
fast
Ryan W.
real
Ryan W.
real fast
Jason T.
So Daniel, you do programming yourself then. Ajax? Ruby On Rails? .......
Daniel N.
i think there are some really big categories, social (myspace, tagworld), file sharing (you tube, flickr)
Shea G.
Take a look at this when you all ave time
Shea G.
Daniel N.
ya, PHP, AJAX, a little RoR...nothing big with RoR yet...
Shea G.
Mark Cuban talking about how much bandwidth a future wired home will need
Shea G.
He came up with 100MB/sec as a basic home package
Jason T.
Very cool
Ryan W.
fibre to every home
Daniel N.
web 3.0? good question...i would say that its probably transparent web 2.0
Shea G.
Screw fiber, WiMax
Shea G.
Infrastructure 2.0
Daniel N.
meaning all of your "files" (images, video, text)will automaticaly get sent to a server
Daniel N.
no work on your part
Ryan W.
i just watched a vlog recently that discussed the fact that virginia is laying down fibre optic cable to the middle of nowhere every time the redo a road
Daniel N.
and it wont matter which device you are tyring to access it from
Daniel N.
it will be there
Shea G.
fiber is nice, it's big
Shea G.
and fast
Ryan W.
i am personally a Wimax fan
Shea G.
it's just expensive
Daniel N.
all of your contacts will be immediatly at hand...
Shea G.
WiMax!
Shea G.
It will be iLife
Ryan W.
so web 3.0 is for the mobile/small platform likely
Apr 11
8:35 PM
Jason T.
Talked a little about this last time but would love to create a virutal environment (Second Life/ World of Warcraft) where the actions people take have positive consequences in the real world. Like if you drill a well for a village in Africa in the virtual environment, a well in a real village in Africa is actually drilled (well maybe not THAT closely tied) but something like the hunger site where an action on the Internet leads to positive consequences in the real world. Just not sure what the premise would be / where the funds would come from. Etc
Shea G.
your fridges will keep track of your food via RFID and will sent a shopping list to your cart at the store, or you can just have it automatically delivered every week
Maegen M.
The City of Bremerton (my hometown) is discussing the possibility of creating a "wireless cloud" over the downtown core that would be supported by fibre
Shea G.
Jason, we should talk. There is a lot of room in SL for something like that
Ryan W.
i'd like to see web 2.0 bring actual people together more in real physical spaces
Stephen F.
So how's web 2.0 going to get rid of co2 emissions?
Shea G.
the fundds would come from the people in SL
Daniel N.
definitely
Daniel N.
thats a lot of what we are doing in the mobile space
Shea G.
They Offset
Jason T.
Ryan - MeetUp.com?
Ryan W.
yep!
Daniel N.
woo!
Ryan W.
made few good (real) contacts there
Jason T.
Shea - lets! Still haven't plugged into SL but NEED to for sure
Ryan W.
not that you guys aren't real
Ryan W.
by guys I obviously meant guys and gals!!!
Shea G.
Jason, go download it and make an account, I'll show you around
Shea G.
and we'll talk about your idea
Shea G.
Ryan, it's so funny how I have friends who I have neither met nor even spoken to
Shea G.
I love the net and what's it's turning into
Ryan W.
agreed see my earlier i love technology bit
Daniel N.
it really is amazing
Shea G.
I remember being 12 and being absolutely amazed that I put up an ugly all text one image webpage for my dad's restaurant
Jason T.
Will do for sure
Shea G.
no, 14 now that I think abou tit
Shea G.
it was 92
Apr 11
8:40 PM
Shea G.
It's amazing how different the world our children are growing up in.
Pete R.
14 in '92-damn, I'm old
Ryan W.
where hanna barbara cartoons around when you where a kid?
Ryan W.
if so watch birdman
Jason T.
What's crazy is I didn't sent my first e-mail until I went to college, and my the time I graduated I was runnint TWO Internet companies. Man
Shea G.
Is it terrible that I had an idea to have my daughter (3.5 years old) find things she liked in a whole sale catelog and create a website branded for her? "Ayla's Website"
Maegen M.
look how far we've come and how for we can go. high tech and high touch
Shea G.
I was born in 1978, good ol' class of 96
Jason T.
Heck no! Get 'em early!
Pete R.
I graduated HS in 79
Shea G.
100% of the profits will go in to her bank account
Jason T.
Same here Shea. ' 78 '96 (err 2001 for college)

Shea G.
I didn't quite graduate college
Stephen F.

Shea G.
:D
Maegen M.
my 4.5 year old son know almost as much about the computer as I do. Which is exciting and scary
Shea G.
that's great Maegen
Shea G.
there is a website for Photoshop for kids
Jason T.
Wow, many of us are clsoe....
Pete R.
Thanks for that Stephen!
Shea G.
I spent 15 minutes with Ayla a few weeks back and she had a ball
Maegen M.
what's the site?
Shea G.
All I did was pick the colors she wanted and changed the brush size every now and then
Shea G.
I don't remember, but I bet I hvae it in my del.icio.us tags, let me check real quick
Maegen M.
sweet
Stephen F.
ha. remember when you could dial a number with a .... dial?
Apr 11
8:45 PM
Pete R.
and only one phone in the house
Stephen F.
but it worked in a blackout!
Maegen M.
5 years ago I didn't even own a cell phone and now I can't leave the house without it
Shea G.
Couldn't find it, hadn't tagged it, but have this to get you started
Shea G.
Jason T.
Times...they are a changin' :-)
Pete R.
Maegen-I had that exact thought today. I don't have a landline anymore
Shea G.
I am even thinking of dropping my cell phone and juyst having a Skype #
Ryan W.
i've been a little over two years without a landline
Ryan W.
you will get a cell phone again! I.ve seen that go bad
Daniel N.
i havent had a land line for 6 years...
Shea G.
Daniel, are you familiar with this product and all the crazy things you can do by tweaking it?
Shea G.
Maegen M.
I've been considering getting rid of my landline but my concern with a small child is the ability to dail 911 in an emergency
Shea G.
I think I read an article in Wired about it
Daniel N.
and had the same number for 10 years...
Daniel N.
YES! asterisk is amazing
Daniel N.
not very user friendly at this point...but its so much fun to hack around with
Apr 11
8:50 PM
Shea G.
Can I ask everyone a quick question?
Jason T.
You just did!
Maegen M.
shoot
Jason T.
<snark>
Shea G.
How would you feel about me getting a sponsor for the Chats? I would give a little thaqnks at the start and finish and they would pay for the actual costs of the Campfire acount
Maegen M.
that wouldn't offend me.
Pete R.
fine by me, why not
Shea G.
What if I told you it was Exxon and they signed a three year $8.7M deal?
Shea G.
Go oil!
Jason T.
Heck, get two sponsors!
Ryan W.
that's a lot of money to attract let me count... 6 people?
Pete R.
I'd say you got ripped off, they can afford more
Shea G.
Global warming is a myth
Shea G.
oil is good
Maegen M.
it's all about the marketing baby
Maegen M.
you can spin anything
Shea G.
Well, are there any last questions for Daniel or any other Chatee?
Ryan W.
was there a topic some time ago?
Shea G.
Web 2.0, Green Business, and where they converge
Ryan W.
where did that go?
Shea G.
we meandered off it, as we are wont to do
Apr 11
8:55 PM
Shea G.
Ryan, what do you think about how we can converge Web 2.0 and Green?
Ryan W.
this could take a minute...
Stephen F.
the tools have to be in service of the green
Jason T.
Daniel, just wanted to say thanks for dropping in. I find web 2.0 stuff fascinating and am glad to have (virtually) met you. It's also good to know somebody who knows a little Ajax in case I get me an idear
Shea G.
quick, eveyrone go check their gmail, flickr account, and RSS feeds!
Stephen F.
not vice versa
Daniel N.
if anyone ever has any technical questions, email me dnewman@gmail.com
Daniel N.
or non technical questions
Shea G.
As a quick aside, when I started up my dotcom back in the day ('99), we spent close to half a million on a website that never really came together, it was always 4-6 weeks away
Jason T.
Stephen - or what if it was a totally mainstream service/product that acted ina green way (like if eBay was wind powered and donated 5% of revenue, etc). Or does that, by definition, make them a green business...hmmm.....
Shea G.
we used a team of Russians, they had a n office in Durham, NC (we were in Chapel Hill), and they used a bunch of programmers back home.
Daniel N.
offset my ebay
Jason T.
Dibs!
Shea G.
It was a running joke in the company that everything would be done in 4-6 weeks, the ever shrinking-back-from-you deadline
Jason T.
I made offset my iPod which I thought was pretty cool. (though I tend to think things I do are cool anway. Stupid ego)
Stephen F.
i think so for ebay, it it acts sustainable it is
Shea G.
Offset My Offset will cover all Offsets, it will be the Mother of All Offsets and it will be mine!!!! /evilLaugh
Shea G.
Ego is good
Jason T.
offset my ego?
Shea G.
Offset My Ego

Jason T.
Hmmm....if Trump alone would by one that would save about half the Amazon....
Ryan W.
sorry i disappeared
Pete R.
Jason, you beat me to it!
Jason T.
buy, that one. that is
Jason T.
That's why offset my life is going to be huge. It's fun to come up with quirky offsets
Shea G.
Anyone want to hear some OML insider news?
Ryan W.
shoot
Maegen M.
please
Daniel N.
i do! i do!
Jason T.
I think you're right Stephen. I need to keep that in mind as idea flow
Jason T.
Totally
Shea G.
We're adjusting our focus a bit
Shea G.
We're launching, but not giving people the ability to create Custom Offsets at first
Shea G.
at first, we'll have a core of up to 10 Offset Builders who will build very stat driven, research backed Offsets
Shea G.
When you Offset Your Flight, you'll know that someone did a lot of work to make sure you are legit in balancing out your flight
Jason T.
Ha ha! Instead of "Insider news" I read "Insider jokes". I kept waiting for the punch line. ARRRrrr r r
Shea G.
3 months or sooner down the road, we'll open up the ability to create Offsets to everyone
Maegen M.
very cool
Shea G.
they will be put into their own category with the warning that anyone can create any Offset, so take Offset My String Cheese Tour with a grain of salt and if you are worried about legitimacy, check their sources
Jason T.
Hmm...that makes sense. I sort of just winged my iPod one (was it that offset that lead to this decision? It was, wasn't it) :-)
Shea G.
:D
Ryan W.
good move, will you give details on how they're calculated i'll want to know more about how an offset is calculated if I am going to shell out big bucks on one
Shea G.
and by the time we give the public the right to do it, the system will be super fine tuned and I'll have acore of people to help budding Offset Builders
Shea G.
All the math will be wide open Ryan
Ryan W.
nice!
Ryan W.
offset my t shirt was legit(ish)
Shea G.
almost everything on the site will be, all our sales data will be streamed out via a feed
Apr 11
9:05 PM
Jason T.
Well, this has been awesome. I told my wonderful wife that I wouldn't geek out past 10 (Iowa boy). So I have to scoot. Thanks everyone and have a great night
Shea G.
Well, beta testers will have dibs on being real Offset Builders, if you can handle the research :)
Ryan W.
can you refresh my memory as to where sales go?
Shea G.
Thanks for coming out Jason
Maegen M.
'night Jason
Ryan W.
is there a min number of offsets I have to create?
Shea G.
Two kinds of Commissions, a Creations Comission and a Sales Comission
Jason T.
It was a blast. See you all next week.
Jason T.
has left the room
Ryan W.
cheers Jason
Shea G.
the wind, trees, and land all cost us money, so that money comes out first
Shea G.
then we take out expenses
Shea G.
then we pay comission
Pete R.
I'm out too. Thanks all-before tonight I didn't even know what web 2.0 was. Remember, I'm still in manual labor!
Shea G.
and then profit sharing to the employees
Ryan W.
where fo you buy trees, wind etc.
Daniel N.
thanks for having me!
Shea G.
then what's left over is corporate booty
Ryan W.
through existing offsets or new relationships with those implementing trees, wind etc?
Shea G.
Thanks for coming out Pete and Daniel
Shea G.
Wind from Renewable Choice Energy
Shea G.
Land from the Nature Conservancy
Shea G.
Trees from American Forests
Ryan W.
are they each going to plug the offsets via their own web prescence?
Shea G.
All heavy hitter partners
Maegen M.
what percentages of funds do you estimate going to each one of the items you just mentioned? or have you worked out the projections that far?
Shea G.
I haven't asked them to
Ryan W.
probably in there interest? I am sure they could be talked into it?
Shea G.
It depends from category to category. I can't go into specific numbers, but I will say that my margins on wind are great, on trees and land terrbile
Ryan W.
but if they drive more people to offsets doesn't everybody win?
Shea G.
so translated out that means TNC and AF get most of the money I collect for them
Apr 11
9:10 PM
Maegen M.
I agree with Ryan on getting some major players involved. It would be a mutually beneficial relationship
Stephen F.
Shea, where's more info on the business (forgive me, I'm new to this network)?
Shea G.
No problem Stephen, let me wrestle up a link for you
Ryan W.
on the other hand I guess they all have donate buttons on their sites that give them 100% margins
Shea G.
Shea G.
start from the beginning of those I'd say and you'd get a good idea
Stephen F.
thanks
Shea G.
but the short of it is that I'm launching a website that will allow people to buy Offsets made up of wind, land, and trees, to balance out very specific activities
Ryan W.
of whoever is left can I ask how many of you use RSS regularly?
Shea G.
Offset My Coffee is X kWh of wind, X new trees, and X square feet of land per cup
Daniel N.
i do
Shea G.
built using stats showing the energy and materials need of a lifecycle of a cup of coffee
Shea G.
I do, very very much do
Shea G.
I am addicted to my feed
Ryan W.
lets broaden it a little , how about you circle of friends?
Ryan W.
do they look at you funny when you say aggregator?
Daniel N.
my circle of friends is pretty geeky....
Shea G.
I've educated a few, but the vast majority have no idea
Shea G.
some are just picking up on blogs
Stephen F.
i'm new to blog world, so only recentl;y
Ryan W.
my question stems from the potential of green/web 2.0 to be delivereed seemlessly into peoples dats stream
Ryan W.
data stream
Daniel N.
i would say that that is a huge part of web 2.0

Ryan W.
shea do you allow trackbacks on musings?
Apr 11
9:20 PM
Shea G.
Yeah, it shows up as a comment
Ryan W.
i tried it didn't work?
Shea G.
It sometimes takes a long, long time I've noticed
Ryan W.
is it as simple as writing a post and including the trackback url?
Shea G.
As a backup you can just create a comment and make it look like a trackback
Ryan W.
crafty
Ryan W.
is that a personal secret?
Ryan W.
you make good use of the trackback I would like to learn more about it
Shea G.
I wish I was that good about tracking back
Shea G.
Seth Godin is a trackback sending link god
Shea G.
I tell you what
Shea G.
Whenever he posts about something green, there usually isn't a rush of Marketing sites tracking back to him, so I've had good luck then
Ryan W.
Shea G.
I get trackback messages weeks and months after the post is made, so I'd just create a comment if I were you. I should probably upgrade to WP 2.0
Stephen F.
funny you mention him because NY Times biz section had story on squido yesterday and the biz is where i live. 20 miles north of nyc on the hudson
Ryan W.
i am on 2.0
Shea G.
Squidoo is awesome
Shea G.
Have you poked around it much Stephen?
Apr 11
9:25 PM
Ryan W.

Ryan W.
are the referals good?
Stephen F.
no just heard about it
Stephen F.
times made it seem similar to about.com
Stephen F.
they started the story with a beef jerky joke ... that you cant really make money writing about it
Shea G.
It gets a lot of traffic and is growning
Shea G.
gowing
Shea G.
Yikes! It got late. I have to run. Thanks for coming out everyone
Shea G.
