Toronto’s First LEED standard building

April 17th, 2006 · No Comments

At the end of last week the city of Toronto was introduced to it’s first LEED standard building. I have been following the LEED building standard alot since a chance seating arrangement on a flight from Vancouver to Toronto about a yeat ago. I was in Vancouver drumming up leads and ideas in the very early days of besustainable and found myself seated next to an Architecture Masters candidate from UBC. Nothing better 5 hours of discussion about green building and sustainability, interupted only briefly for the dispensing of canned soda’s in miniature plastic cups.
Back to the building. I am very pleased to see the completion of a LEED building in T.O. and I will have to keep my eye out for more links to the story. Ideas like this should be spread and revisted often (I’d like to see the five year cost comparison of this building to one of equal size and completed at approximately the same time).

“The 110,000-square-ft. eight-storey structure is Toronto’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered commercial building.
Features include a system that collects rainfall on the roof and uses the water in low-flush toilets, a roof covered with a membrane that deflects heat, and use of special glass which blocks out heat.” more from the source ,some back story from SmartLiving St Lawrence

The building has been nominated for two Toronto Green Awards. (Note to self post about the green awards!)
