Durham E-bike Association

February 28th, 2008 · 3 Comments

e-bikesThe Durham E-bike Association is “a recently formed association of electric bicycle (e-bike) enthusiasts in the Durham Region and we are looking to promote e-bike awareness in Durham region, share information and experience about riding e-bikes, and to have some fun while doing it!”

Earlier this week the Sounds Sustainable podcast caught up with Jason Carter of the Durham E-bike association at the Oshawa Energy Conservation Fair.

What is an e-bike?

The Short Answer…

In Ontario, an E-bike is a bicycle-like vehicle powered by an electric motor that, if it meets certain legal specifications, can be driven on Ontario roads as a bicycle, that is:

  • the operator of an e-bike must follow the rules of the road, but is not required to have a driver’s license or to carry insurance, and
  • the e-bike is not required to be licensed (or plated.)

Under this arrangement, riders of e-bikes are able to take advantage of a powered form of transportation that has both a low operating cost and a low environmental impact.

Its good to see more and more of these sites on the east coast. As summer comes and gas hits for $4 I have a feeling this association has plenty of room to grow.
